It is worth noting that if you do turn off name resolution you can only use IP addresses for servers in the privileges: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/dns.html
MySQL uses a host name cache, so if your DNS is properly configured to include rDNS entries, skipping name resolution will most likely result in no noticeable benefit.
If you are using dnsmask internally it has a ttl of zero so if mysql honors that you would see an increase. Either way it’s useful info.
